Pure Substance
Matter that has a uniform and unchanging composition, including elements and compounds.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded, allowing for the separation of their individual components.
Solute
The substance that is dissolved in a solution.
Solvent
The substance that dissolves the solute, forming a solution.
Aqueous Solution
A solution in which water is the solvent.
Suspension
A mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are not dissolved and may settle over time.
Colloid
A mixture where suspended particles are small enough not to settle out but large enough to scatter light, resulting in a cloudy appearance.
Filtration
A method of separating mixtures that uses a filter to remove solids from liquids or gases.
Decanting
A separation technique where a liquid is poured off from a solid that has settled to the bottom.
Evaporation
A process of separating a solute from a solvent by heating the solution to form vapor, leaving the solute behind.
What is a solution?
A uniform mixture created when one substance (solute) dissolves in another (solvent).
What is solvent extraction?
A technique that separates components of a mixture based on their solubility in a chosen solvent.
