Title of investigation
Success of regeneration in Cardiff Bay
Purpose of the investigation
To see if the regeneration project created a “superb environment” that all people are able to “work, live and play”. There will not be an environmental drop in quality
Location
Cardiff Bay - East of Swansea, in Port Talbot
Potential risks
Cars - getting ran over, stranger danger - attack, uneven pavement - slips and trips
How do reduce risk - getting ran over
Wait until a green light and be aware of all surroundings at all times
How do reduce risk - stranger danger
Always stay in groups, have a phone number of the teachers
How do reduce risk - uneven pavement
Wear appropriate footwear and warn other people where the slips and trips are
History of Cardiff
In 1905, it was the world’s largest coal export port. Over 30 million tonnes. Deindustrialised in 1950s, lots of derelict land. Barrage was created (1990) and regeneration project was in 1987
Why was Cardiff Bay a suitable location for the investigation?
It is a suitable size to collect a sufficient amount of data. It is safe and accessible ( Bute st off of A4119, A4232), has been regenerated and has low levels of crime ( lots of CCTV), this meant that we could go off into groups without teachers, which helped us collect more data.
Sampling strategy of a questionaire
Random (opportunistic)
How will a questionnaire help to answer the aims of the investigation?
It will get a first hand opinion from a wide variety of people ( diff gender, age , situation )
How will EQA data help us answer the original aims of the investigation?
We were able to see the differences further away from the bay and judge whether the regeneration was successful
Analysis from Rose Diagram
We can gather that the Cardiff regeneration was unsuccessful. This is because we only walked 800m and found that there was a drop in the environmental quality which doesn’t follow our hypothesis. The building quality dropped from 5 to 1 which proves that quality of life could have decreased as well
Did we meet the original aims of the investigation?
Partly
Are our conclusions reliable?
Could have been affected by weather - cold on the day ( less people ). Didn’t compare to the area before the regeneration
How could we improve the investigation?
Use secondary data - online
Repeat survey over larger area - wider range of people , more data - reliable conclusions
Why might it not have been a suitable location at the time?
We only had a day to assess Cardiff Bay, we couldn’t see all of it. If we would have had more time, we could have gone into the centre of Cardiff. We also recorded the data on a Monday which could have changed our views as it was quieter
