What is Interphase?
-Interphase is the longest phase in the cell cycle.
-accounting for about 90 percent of the cell’s life.
- It occurs before a cell enters the mitotic phase.
What are the main activities and characteristics of the cell during Interphase?
-the cell grows by producing proteins and cytoplasmic organelles
-duplicating the chromosomes
- preparing for cell division.
What are the three main phases of Interphase?
The three phases of interphase are:
G1 Phase (First Gap Phase)
S Phase (Synthesis Phase)
G2 Phase (Second Gap Phase)
Describe the key events and duration of the G1 Phase (First Gap Phase) of interphase.
-synthesis of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and enzymes (needed for DNA replication) occurs.
-Cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria and ribosomes also increase,
-the volume of cytoplasm grows
-cells increase in size.
-usually lasts about 5-6 hours.
