What are the following abbreviations:
RBC
HCT
HGB
MCV
MCH
MCHC
RDW
%RETIC, RETIC
RBC: total # erythrocytes
HCT: hematocrit, RBC ratio of total lood volume
HGB: hemoglobin concentration
MCV: mean cell volume
MCH, MCHC: mean cell hemoglobin; mean cell hemoglobin concentration (accounts for cell volume)
RDW: RBC distribution width (size variation)
%RETIC, RETIC: reticulocyte % and count
What are the following abbreviations:
WBC
%NEU, %LYM, %MONO, %EOS, %BASO
NEU, LYM, MONO, EOS, BASO
PLT
MPV
PDW
PCT
WBC: total number of wbcs
%NEU, %LYM, %MONO, %EOS, %BASO: percent of each wbc
NEU, LYM, MONO, EOS, BASO: cell counts
PLT: total number of platelets
MPV: mean platelet volume
PDW: platelet distribution width
PCT: plateletcrit value (blood volume occupied by platelets)
How long does it take ProCyte to come off standy mode?
8 minutes
Explain the monthly maintenance routine for ProCyte
Put into standby mode when not in use (overnight)
Shut off once a week
Monthly rinse
Clean the outside and the fan filter once a month
Explain what the ProCyte "dot plots" are and briefly how they are created by the analyzer. What two methods does the analyzer use to look at cell counts and morphology?
- dot plots are visual representations of the CBC
- Each dot represents one cell graphed by size and granularity or fluorescnce
- the analyzer uses side-scattered fluorescence and side scatter
- two methods: impedence counter, laser cytometry

Why is lymphoid leukemia hard to diagnose accurately with the Procyte?
- Can cause low rbc and platelet count which throws off the diff %
- Procyte can't tell the difference in types of lymphocytes
- Procyte can't tell the difference between healthy lymphocytes (due to infection) or abnormal lymphocytes (due to cancer)
What is thrombocytopenia? Why would this result need to be checked manually with a blood smear?
- low platelet count
- platelets tend to clump and be counted as low numbers or mislabeled in the ProCyte

What is high RDW called and what does it mean?
- anisocytosis
- can indicate regnerative anemia, liver or kidney disease, cancer, nutrient deficiency

What can a high EOS count mean?
parasites or allergies

What can a low MCHC mean?
- low hemoglobin per cell, likely due to deficiencies in vitamin B6, protein, or iron necessary to make RBCs
