Depression is found under 'Mood disorders' where depression and bipolar disorder can be found whereas Anxiety is found under 'Anxiety disorders' where OCD and panic disorder is found.
Distinguish between the terms 'fear' and 'anxiety'
Fear is an emotional reaction to something real which is present or anticipated and is perceived to threaten out wellbeing, whereas anxiety is a reaction to the anticipation of a future threat. the threat is often vague, unknown and the reaction tends to be longer lasting than fear.
Causes of anxiety
family history, personality traits, ongoing stressful events, physical health problems, other mental health conditions, substance abuse.
Causes of depression
Family history, poor diet, drug abuse, chemical imbalance, poor coping skills, poverty, bullying, isolation, lack of support.
depressed mood
symptoms of feeling low, sad, useless, helpless and hopeless.
Anhedonia
symptoms include lack of enjoyment, enthusiasm or interest in activities once enjoyed.
Cognitive
symptoms are negative or irrational thinking.
psychomotor changes
symptoms are slowed movements, thoughts and speech.
biological change
symptoms are loss of appetite, change in weight, sleep disturbance, constipation, fatigue and exhaustion.
