photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 6H2O → 6O2 + C6H12O6
pigments
chlorophyll a: absorbs blue – green light
chlorophyll b: absorbs yellow – green wavelength
carotenoids: absorbs blue/violet light and reflect orange
xanthophylls: absorbs yellow pigments
anthocyanin: absorbs red violet and blue
Chlorophyll is a green pigment; it reflects the green spectrum making leaves appear green to vision.
describe the roles of light and pigments in photosynthesis
Photosynthetic cells contain special pigments that absorb light energy. Different pigments respond to different wavelengths of visible light. Chlorophyll, the primary pigment used in photosynthesis, reflects green light and absorbs red and blue light most strongly.
Explain the separation of pigments by paper chromatography, based on their molecular structure
In paper chromatography, paper marked with an unknown, such as plant extract, is placed in a developing chamber with a specified solvent. The solvent carries the dissolved pigments as it moves up the paper. The pigments are carried at different rates because they are not equally soluble.
wavelengths of visible light
380 nm - 750 nm
violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, red
what is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis helps channel the energy from the sun into chemical energy by using the light energy to drive the formation of sugar in plants
➢The sun itself is a giant combusting ball of fire
Within it, hydrogen is continually being converted to helium with a release of photonic energy which travels down to earth
➢Some of these photons within a certain wavelengths (visible part of the EM spectrum) are absorbed
➢A certain green pigment in the CHLOROPLAST of plants called CHLOROPHYLL is responsible for capturing the light energy from the sun.
-produces oxygen & glucose
thylakoid
flattened membrane sac inside the chloroplast, used to convert light energy into chemical energy
shorter wavelength = higher energy
longer wavelength = lower energy
