Achievement Motive
The need to master difficult challenges, outperform others, and meet high standards of excellence. It involves the desire to excel, especially in competition.
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
A projective test that requires subjects to respond to vague, ambiguous stimuli (pictures of people in ambiguous scenes) in ways that may reveal personal motives and traits. Stories about the scenes are scored to measure the strength of various needs.
Need for Achievement
A fairly stable aspect of personality, measured using the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), that influences persistence, educational attainment, and career choices.
Situational Determinants of Achievement Behavior
External factors that influence achievement strivings, including the probability of success and the incentive value of success.
Probability of Success
One's estimate of the likelihood of achieving success on a particular task; a situational determinant of achievement behavior.
Incentive Value of Success
The tangible and intangible rewards for success on a specific task; a situational determinant of achievement behavior.
