aim
to investigate if articulatory suppression would influence recall of a written list of phonologically dissimilar letters in serial recall
method
10 lists of 7 letters: F, K, L, M, R, X, Q
Experimental group said ‘1,2‘ from the time the list was shown until they filled the answer sheet
control group saw list for five secons, waited five seconds, then wrote down
repeated ten times
scored for accuracy of recall
results
mean recall in control group: 76%
mean recall in experimental group: 45%
conclusion
articulatory suppression prevents rehearsal in the phonological loop because of overload, which supports the working memory
support for WMM
disruption of phonological loop through use of articulatory suppression results in less accurate worling memory
more difficult for participants in experimental conditions to memorise letter strings than participants in control group
articulatory suppression overloads rehearsal capability
