• Operation → the actual procedure you do (like "one event").
Sore/hurt/pain
Sore → your body part feels tender or uncomfortable (usually after exercise or irritation). Example: "My muscles are sore."
• Hurt → general word for when something causes pain. Example: "My arm hurts."
• Pain → more formal or strong feeling of discomfort. Example: "I have chest pain."
Think: Sore = tender, Hurt = informal, Pain = serious/formal.
Illness/disease
Disease → the actual problem in your body. (Doctors can name it.)
• Illness → how you feel because of that problem.
Example:
• Disease = flu (the virus in your body)
• Illness = feeling tired, feverish, and weak because of the flu
Think: Disease = the cause, Illness = the feeling.
Injured/damaged
Injured = people/animals, Damaged = things.
Thin/slim
Thin → just describes being not fat, can sometimes sound a bit negative. Example: "He's very thin."
• Slim → also not fat, but sounds healthy and attractive. Example: "She has a slim figure."
Shortcut: Thin = neutral, Slim = nice/positive.
Remedy/cure/therapy
Remedy → something that helps or soothes a problem (can be home or medicine). Example: "Honey is a remedy for a sore throat."
• Cure → something that completely removes the disease. Example: "Penicillin is a cure for some infections."
• Therapy → a treatment process to improve health over time. Example: "Physical therapy helps after a broken leg."
Shortcut: Remedy = helps, Cure = fixes completely, Therapy = ongoing treatment.
Effect/result
Effect = impact, Result = outcome.
Examine/investigate
Examine → look at something carefully to check or study it, often in detail. Example: "The doctor examined my throat."
• Investigate → search for facts or the truth, often about a problem or crime. Example: "The police are investigating the theft."
Shortcut: Examine = check closely, Investigate = find out why or how.
