Parasite
any living organism in or on any other living creature, takes advantage of the host by feeding off cells and tissue
Infestation
the presence of an unusually large number or insects or animals in a place, typically to cause damage or disease
Where are parasites found
in or on animals, blood, food, insects and water
PPV for a new born
less then 100bpm
CPR for a new born
less then 60 bpm
after 30 sec of PPV using room air
Contraindications PPV and CPR
obviously dead as per BLS
Presumed gestational age less than 20 weeks
when might we need to resuscitate a new born
less then 36 weeks breech delivery
more then 41 weeks intrapartum bleeding
pre, and eclampsia meconium stained amniotic fluid
maternal hypertension prolapsed umbilical cord
maternal gestation no prenatal care
what present of new borns need resuscitation
10% require assistance to breathe
1% require extensive resuscitation
newborn
less than 24 hours
neonate
greater than or equal to 24 hours old
routine care
Provide warmth
•Dry baby
•Provide warmth
•Clear airway (only if necessary- copious fluid)
•Provide warmth
•Ongoing evaluation
drying the baby
dry amniotic fluid and vernix
place baby on dry surface, remove wet towels
keep baby warm during this procedure
suctioning the airway
avoid unnecessary suctioning. (to much can induce bradycardia)
amniotic fluid clear?
no need to suction
amniotic fluid has meconium
If the baby has poor muscle tone, poor breathing efforts, suction the mouth and pharynx – then the nose while ensuring oxygenation is maintained
•Routine meconium suctioning is not required
hypothermia in a baby
associated with serious morbidities: respiratory issues, increased risk for intraventricular hemorrhage, hypoglycemia and sepsis
Primary Apnea
If newborn experiences a
relatively short period of
hypoxia in utero, the baby
can present as apneic and
bradycardia
• These babies will respond to
drying and stimulation
secondary Apnea
Hypoxia continues during
primary apnea
• The baby may respond to
ventilatory support
Scabies
7-year itch
Itch mite
MRSOPA
Mask adjustment
MRSOPA
Reposition airway
MRSOPA
Suction mouth and nose
MRSOPA
open mouth
MRSOPA
Pressure (increase ventilatory pressure- slightl
MRSOPA
Alternative airway
Newborn VSA
Start with PPV on room air prior to initiating chest compressions
Lithotripsy
A medical procedure that uses shock waves to break up kidney stones or other calculi in the urinary tract.
Uremia
A condition associated with elevated urea and other nitrogenous waste products in the blood, often resulting from kidney failure.
UTI
Urinary Tract Infection, characterized by the presence of harmful bacteria in the urinary system, leading to symptoms such as pain, urgency, and frequent urination.
Urosepsis
A severe bacterial infection that spreads to the urinary tract and can lead to systemic infection, often arising from a UTI.
Acute Renal Failure
A rapid decline in kidney function, resulting in the inability to filter waste and maintain fluid balance, often caused by injury or illness.
Chronic Renal Failure
A gradual loss of kidney function over time, leading to the kidneys' inability to filter blood effectively and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance. This condition may require dialysis or renal transplantation.
GTPAL
Gravity
GTPAL
Term (37 weeks or older)
GTPAL
Premature (23-37 weeks)
GTPAL
Abortions (or miscarriages)
GTPAL
Living
Concussion
mild traumatic brain injury that results from a sudden impact or rapid acceleration and deceleration of the brain within the skull
Contusion
a bruise on the brain’s surface caused by a direct blow to the head
Bleeding or swelling in the brain tissue
Brain Bleed
Cerebral Herniation
brain tissue is displaced due to increased intracranial pressure or localized mass effects
Renal Colic
severe pain caused by the obstruction of the urinary tract due to kidney stones or other factors.
Dialysis
a medical procedure that removes waste, fluids, and toxins from the blood when the kidneys are not functioning properly.
Central Nervous System Disruption
Baseline mental status- AVPU
Distal Motor function
Distal Sensory function
Peripheral Nervous System Disruption
Cranial nerve function (Pupils, eyes, smile, speech, swallow, shoulder shrug)
Hemiparesis
a condition characterized by weakness or partial paralysis on one side of the body, often resulting from brain injury or stroke.
Hemiplegia
a condition marked by complete paralysis on one side of the body, usually resulting from a brain injury or stroke.
Tonic Activity
Rigid, contracted body posture
Clonic Activity
Moving torso, rhythmic contraction
paresthesia
numbness and tingling
Anesthesia
Inability to feel anything
