Slant Rhyme
rhyme that is not exact, but “close enough”
Eye Rhyme
Words that look like they rhyme but don’t sound like it. Ex: “bomb” and “tomb”
Masculine Rhyme
rhyme that ends with a stressed syllable or one syllable word
Feminine Rhyme
rhyme that ends with an unstressed syllable. Usually two syllable words that rhyme are a feminine rhyme.
Sibilance
Repetition of sounds with a high-frequency “hissing” effect, usually “s”, “sh,” and “ch” sounds.
Enjambement
the continuation of grammatical structure across lines of poetry
Formal poetry
poetry that adheres to a structure for rhyme and meter such as the sonnet or the villanelle.
Blank verse
poetry written with meter but without a consistent rhyme scheme.

Juxtaposition
two things placed alongside one another for a contrasting effect
Foil
A character whose traits contrast with another character’s, emphasize their distinctive characteristics.
