MOOD DISORDERS
characterized by gross deviation in mood
MAJOR DEPRESSIVE EPISODE and MANIA
fundamental state in mood disorder
MAJOR DEPRESSIVE EPISODE
an extremely depressed mood state nearly everyday that last at least 2 weeks and;
includes cognitive symptoms (feelings or worthlessnes and indecisiveness) and disturbed physical function (altered sleeping patterns, appetite, and weightloss)
SOMATIC or VEGATIVE SYMPTOMPS
physical changes that are central indicator of MDE; weightloss, appetite, notable loss of energy
ANHEDONIA
loss of energy and inability to engage in pleasurable activities and have any “fun”
MANIA
an individual who have extreme pleasure in every activity
hyperactivity
require little sleep
grandiose plans
express many ideas at once
irritability and self-distructive tendencies
can last a week
FLIGHT IDEAS
an individual in mania that expresses too many exciting ideas at the same time
HYPOMANIA
less sever mania
does not cause marked impairment in social and occupational function
last only 4 days
UNIPOLAR MOOD DISORDER
the moods of those depress and in mania said to suffer from these since their mood seem to remain on one “pole” of the usual depression-mania continuum
MIXED FEATURES
experience both manic symptoms but feel somewhat depress or anxious at the same time or be depress with few symptoms of mania
FULL REMISSION
patient recover fully for at least 2 months between episodes
PARTIAL REMISSION
patial recovery retaining some depressive symptoms of a patient
MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER
descibed by the presence of depression and the absence of manic or hypomanic
have had major depressive episode not marked by other disorders
RECURRENT
the occurrence of multiple distinct depressive episodes over time, rather than a single isolated episode.
PERSISTENT DEPRESSIVE DISORDER (Dysthymia)
long-term unchanging symptoms of mild depression lasting for 20 to 30 years if untreated
daily function not impaired but could affect overtime
mostly in its chonicity
DOUBLE DEPRESSION
marked by major depressive episode and persistent depression with fewer symptoms
SPECIFIERS
additional descriptors used in diagnostic systems like DSM-5 to further characterize the current episode, its severity, course, or unique features, helping clinicians refine diagnosis and tailor treatment
ONSET DYSTHYMIA SPECIFIER
Early Onset: before 21 yrs old
Late Onset: at 21 yrs old or older

full criteria for major depressive episode have not been met in at least the preceding 2 years
WITH PERSISTENT MAJOR DEPRESSIVE EPISODE
full criteria of major depressive episode has been met throughout the preceding 2 years period
WITH INTERMITTENT MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER, WITH CURRENT EPISODE
full criteria for MDE are currently met, but there have been periods of at least 8 weeks the preceding 2 years with symptoms below the threshold for a full major depressive episode
WITH INTERMITTENT MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER, WITHOUT CURRENT EPISODE
full cretia for MDE is not currently met, but there has been one in at least 2 preceding years
PSYCHOTIC FEATURES SPECIFIERS
Individuals during major depressive or manic episode showed psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions
ANXIOUS DISTRESS SPECIFIERS
presence and severity of accompanying anxiety; anxiety indicates more severe condition, makes suicidal thoughts and planning more likely
MIXED FEATURES SPECIFIERS
during depressive episode they met 3 criteria of mania
MELANCHOLIC FEATURES SPECIFIERS
specifier applied when MDE is met, characterized by weightloss, sever somatic symptoms, loss of libido, excessive or inapropriate guilt, and adhedonia
CATATONIC FEATURE SPECIFIER
shown a symptom of catalepsy—an excessive but radom movement — during MDE or in the context of PDD
