Priority during primary assessment
Manage the XABCs.
Purpose of a thorough physical exam after XABCs
To provide additional information on the exposure the patient experienced.
Action to identify systemic problems
Do a general review of all body systems.
Patients requiring a minimum physical exam review
Patients with extensive chemical burns, other significant trauma, or who are unresponsive.
Action after the primary assessment
Get a complete set of baseline vital signs.
Limitation of many poisons
They give no outward indications of the seriousness of the exposure.
Sensitive indicators of serious poisoning
Alterations in the level of consciousness, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and skin.
