New cards

Support from Clive wearing

Caught virus which led him to gain amnesia(memory loss)

Only remember information for 20-30seconds

Could recall information from his past

Unable to transfer information from STM to LTM but able to retrieve some information successfully

Case supports the idea that memories are formed by passing information from one store to another and that damage to any part of the MSM can cause a memory impairment.

2
New cards

Case study KF refute MSM

Motorbike accident injury

Could recall information in his LTM

Had issues with STM

Able to remember visual images but unable to remember sounds

Suggests that there are at least two components to short term memory and that MSM may provide an overly simplified account of the STM

3
New cards

Support from psychological studies

MIller supports idea off limited capacity of 7+- 2 chunks of information in STM

Peterson and Peterson supports the idea of a limited duration in STM of around 20seconds

Barick supports idea of lifetime duration in LTM

These studies all support the different elements of MSM and suggests that the model representation is accurate to the human memory

Research into MSM negative

Experimental r - it attempts to explain complex behaviour by relying on isolated variables, operationalised in a lab .

Memory is a complex phenomenon so psychologists argue that reducing memory to isolated variable undermines the complexity of the human memory and does not provide us with a comprehensive understanding of memory.
