Progressivism
A social and political movement in the early 20th century that sought to improve society by addressing social issues, promoting democracy, and regulating the economy.
Paternalism
The attitude of taking care of or controlling others under the belief that it is for their own good, often seen in Progressive policies.
Plessy v Ferguson (1896)
A landmark Supreme Court case that established the doctrine of 'separate but equal', justifying segregation.
Lynching
The extrajudicial killing of individuals, often used as a tool of racial control primarily against Black Americans.
Niagara Movement
A civil rights organization founded in 1905 by W.E.B. Du Bois and others to fight for the rights of Black Americans.
NAACP
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, established in 1909, focused on abolishing segregation and increasing educational opportunities for Black Americans.
Federal Anti-Lynching Bill
Legislation aimed at making lynching a federal crime, which was finally passed in 2022.
18th Amendment
A constitutional amendment that prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages, enacted in 1919.
Muller v Oregon
A Supreme Court case that upheld a law limiting women's work hours in factories, based on the belief that women's roles were different from men's.
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
A tragic 1911 industrial disaster that highlighted working conditions for women and led to increased safety regulations.
Intersectionality
A concept that explores how various social identities (such as race, gender, and class) intersect to create different modes of discrimination and privilege.
National Women's Party (NWP)
A women's political party led by Alice Paul that advocated for women’s suffrage through more militant tactics.
19th Amendment
Ratified in 1920, it granted women the right to vote in the United States.
Suffrage Movement
A movement advocating for the right of women to vote and run for office.
Social Justice
The view that everyone deserves equal economic, political, and social rights and opportunities.
Muckrakers
Investigative journalists who exposed corruption and social injustices during the Progressive Era.
Jim Crow Laws
State and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States.
