Thigh and Hip Joint Complex
Includes bones, ligaments, motions, musculature, structures, and neurovascular components.
Femur
The thigh bone, supports weight and allows movement.
Innominate Bone
Fusion of the ilium, ischium, and pubis at the acetabulum.
Hip Joint
A ball and socket joint allowing multi-directional movement.
Flexion
Decreases the angle between thigh and pelvis.
Extension
Increases the angle between thigh and pelvis.
Internal Rotation
Anterior surface of the thigh rotates towards the midline.
External Rotation
Anterior surface of the thigh rotates away from the midline.
Iliofemoral Ligament
Prevents hyperextension of the hip joint.
Pubofemoral Ligament
Prevents hyperabduction of the hip joint.
Ischiofemoral Ligament
Prevents hyperadduction of the hip joint.
Ligamentum Teres
Holds the head of the femur into the acetabulum.
Gluteus Maximus
Largest gluteal muscle, responsible for hip extension.
Iliopsoas
Muscle group that includes psoas major and iliacus, primary hip flexors.
Adductors
Group of muscles responsible for adducting the hip.
Neurovascular Supply
Includes the femoral nerve and associated blood vessels supplying the lower extremity.
Clinical Significance
Methods for checking neurovascular function in the lower extremity through sensory and vascular assessments.
