Synarthrosis
A joint with no movement, where bony edges are closely interlocked, providing extreme strength.
Suture
A synarthrotic joint located between the bones of the skull, with interlocked edges bound by dense fibrous connective tissue.
Amphiarthrosis
A joint that permits limited movement, connected by collagen fibers or cartilage, and must be stronger than a freely movable joint.
Gomphosis
A synarthrosis that binds teeth to bony sockets in the maxillae and mandible, through a periodontal ligament.
Synchondrosis
A rigid, cartilaginous bridge between two articulating bones, such as between the first ribs and the sternum.
Synostosis
An immovable joint created when two bones fuse and the boundary between them disappears.
Syndesmosis
A type of amphiarthrosis where bones are connected by a ligament.
Symphysis
A joint where articulating bones are connected by a wedge or pad of fibrocartilage, like the pubic symphysis.
Diarthrosis
A freely movable joint, often associated with synovial joints.
Monaxial movement
Movement in one plane, such as in the elbow or ankle.
Biaxial movement
Movement in two planes, found in joints like the ribs and wrist.
Triaxial movement
Movement in three planes, such as in the shoulder and hip joints.
Meniscus
A fibrocartilage pad within a synovial joint that functions as a shock absorber.
Bursae
Fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between tissues in joints.
Dislocation (luxation)
The complete displacement of a bone from a joint that can damage articular cartilage, ligaments, and the joint capsule.
Subluxation
A partial dislocation of a joint.
