compelling evidence against chemiosmotic theory

chemiosmotic theory suggest H* ions are actively moved across the membrane. Suggest H* gradient is responsible for making ATP.

  • membranes make ATP is there is no electron transport as long as pH produced.

  • chemicals prevent H* ions being transports across the membrane.

Why wont 32 ATP be generated?

  • energy has been put into these processes. (active transport)

  • for every 2H atoms donated by NAD-, 2.5 ATPs made (“3”)

  • for every 2H atoms donated by FAD-, 1.5 ATPs made (“2”)

Why is aerobic respiration efficient and not anaerobic?

Aerobic produces 32/38 ATP compared to anaerobic respiration which only experiences glycolysis. Only forms 2 ATP. INEFFICIENT.
