Militarism
Building up strong armies and weapons; believing a country should always be ready for war.
Nationalism
Pride in your nation or ethnic group; wanting independence or power for your people.
Imperialism
When a strong country takes over weaker territories or colonies.
Triple Alliance
An alliance before WWI between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
Triple Entente
France, Russia, Britain (the alliance against the Triple Alliance).

Ruler of Germany during WWI.
Powder Keg of Europe
Nickname for the Balkans because it was unstable and ready to explode into war
Central Powers
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria.

The battle line in France and Belgium.

The battle line between Germany/Austria-Hungary and Russia.

The right of people to choose their own government.

Treaty that ended WWI; punished Germany heavily.
League of Nations
international peacekeeping organization formed after WWI
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
When a country’s submarines sink any ships they find (enemy or not) without warning.
Total War
when a country uses all its resources, people, factories, money, and military for the war effort.
Rationing
Limiting how much food, fuel, or other goods people can buy so the military has enough supplies.
Propaganda
Information (posters, speeches, ads) used to persuade people to support the government or the war.
Armistice
an agreement to stop fighting (a temporary or permanent cease-fire), often leading to peace talks.
Treaty of Brest- Litovsk
an agreement between Russia and Germany that ended Russia’s involvement in world war 1.
Gallipoli Campaign
A world war 1 battle in 1915 where allied forces tried to take control of Dardanelles strait in Turkey but failed
Dardanelles
strait in Turkey that connects the Aegean sea to the sea of Marmara
Influenza epidemic
Global outbreak of a deadly flu in 1918- 1919
Battle of the Marne
World war 1 battle where the French and British forces stopped the Germany army from reaching Paris
