In your own words, define muscular strength.
Muscular strength is the maximum force a muscle or muscle group can generate during a single effort. It is an important part of overall fitness and is essential for performing everyday tasks.
List and explain 3 elements/components involved in Muscular Strength
Maximal Strength - The highest level of force a muscle can produce in a single contraction (one rep max in weights)
Endurance Strength - The capacity to sustain repeated muscle contractions without fatigue. (plank hold, wall sits, body weight squats, push ups)
Relative Strength - How much force a person can exert relative to size. It is crucial in sports where body control and weight management is important (gymnastics, rock climbing, martial arts)
List and explain 2 factors that involve the physiology of Muscular Strength
Muscle Contraction - Strength results from the sliding filament theory, where actin and myosin filaments within muscle fibers slide past each other to create contraction.
Adaptation- Regular strength training leads to muscular growth, increased neural efficiency, and metabolic changes that enhance strength.
List and explain 3 benefits of muscular strength
Physical health - improved bone density, joint health, metabolisim, and body composition
Athletic performance - increased power, speed, agility, and endurance
Mental health - boosted self-esteem, reduced stress, and improved mood by releasing endorphins
List and explain 3 methods to improve muscular strength
Resistance Training - Using weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight excerises to challenge muscles
Progressive Overload - Gradually increasing the resistance or intensity to stimulate muscle growth
Recovery - Allowing adequate rest and recovery time for muscles to repair and grow stronger
Why do weightlifters train with low reps and heavy weights, while marathon runners do high reps with lighter weights?
Low reps and heavy weights build muscle. High reps with lighter weights build endurance
