Formation of the Confederacy
Made to protect enslavement rights
Fort Sumter
The first significant Civil War battle. Also known as the first shots of the war.
Border States-
Slave states that remained in the union due to the fact that the South fired the first shots. Consists of delware, West virginia, missouri, kentucky, and maryland
Creation of West Virginia-
Virginia quite litterly split in two due to the debate about slavery. The top half remained in the union and was considered a free state but the lower half seceeded completly.
Trent affair-
An almost catastrophic event nearly bringing Britain in supporting the Confederacy; the union arrested a british steamer carrying two confederate diplomats.
The Alabama
Secret British built and manned ship that raided union sea vessels for the confederacy.
Laird Rams
Two well-armed ironclad warships for the Confederacy were made by Britain.
Writ of Habeus Corpsus
A law later suspended by lincoln stating that arrest is legal even before the examination of a court.
NY Draft Riots
Particulary the irish working class of America, people who were enraged about the New York drafting system, particualry the fact that you can pay your way out.
Greenbacks
Was distributed during the Civil War. Had no “Real” value as it was not created to keep the economy the same. This later lowered the value of American currency, or otherwise known as inflation.
Homestead Act of 1862
A period of time where new settlers were offered land in exchange for their word that they will grow it and live on it in five years.
US Sanitary commisions
An organization foundede with the help of Elzabeth Blackwell that trained nurses and improved medical supplies for the union.

A key figure that prevented major British intervention.

French Emperor that exploited the war by taking advantage of Mexico

First woman to recieve a medical degree;helped with the US sanitary commisions

Nurse and founder of the American Red Cross, known for her work during the Civil War.

A confederate nurse the ran a hospital called richmond. Low death rates

A famine in ireland that caused many irish settlers to appear during the war. created less job opportunites and outrage.
