Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram
A diagram that plots the luminosity or absolute magnitude of stars against their surface temperatures.
Main Sequence Stars
Stars that fall in a band on the H-R diagram and are actively fusing hydrogen into helium.
Solar Mass
A unit of measurement equivalent to the mass of our sun, used to express stellar masses.
Giant Stars
Stars that have diameters from 10-100 times greater than our sun and are more luminous.
Supergiants
Giant stars with diameters more than 100 times greater than our sun.
White Dwarfs
Stars near the end of their lives, which were once red giants that have lost their outer atmosphere.
Surface Temperature
The temperature of a star's outer layer, which affects its emitted color.
Luminosity
The intrinsic brightness of a star, often plotted against temperature on the H-R diagram.
Absolute Magnitude
A measure of a star's intrinsic brightness, as opposed to apparent brightness as seen from Earth.
Color and Temperature of Stars
The color of a star is determined by its surface temperature, ranging from red in cooler stars to bluish-white in the hottest stars.
