Associative Learning
learning that certain events occur together
what is the process of learning associations called?
conditioning
Neutral Stimulus (NS)
in classical conditioning, a stimulus that elicits no response before conditioning
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)
in classical conditioning, a stimulus that always will naturally and automatically trigger an unconditioned response
Unconditioned Response (UCR)
in classical conditioning, an unlearned, naturally occurring response to an unconditioned stimulus
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
in classical conditioning, an originally neutral stimulus that, after association with an unconditioned stimulus, comes to trigger a condition/learned response.
Conditioned Response (CR)
in classical conditioning, a learned response to a previously neutral (but now conditioned) stimulus.
Acquisition
the initial stage in classical conditioning when one links a neutral stimulus to an unconditioned stimulus so that the neutral stimulus begins triggering the conditioned stimulus.

Does order of presentation of the NS and UCS matter?
Yes. NS must be presented before UCS in order for conditioning to occur.
Higher-order conditioning
a procedure in which the conditioned stimulus is one conditioning experience is paired with a new neutral stimulus, creating a second (often weaker) conditioned stimulus.
What is Extinction?
the diminishing of a conditioned response when UCS does not follow CS.
Spontaneous Recovery
the reappearance, after a pause, of an extinguished conditioned response even though there have not been any further pairings of CS & UCS
(I think of it as hope)

Generalization
the tendency, once a response has been conditioned, for a stimulus that is similar to the conditioned stimu
