Exothermic reaction
A chemical reaction where energy is released into the surroundings. This results in a temperature increase. The energy needed to break bonds in the reactants is less than the energy needed to form bonds in the products.
Endothermic reaction
A chemical reaction where energy is absorbed from the surroundings into the reaction. This results in a temperature decrease. The energy needed to break bonds in the reactants is greater than the energy needed to form bonds in the products.
Bond energies
Energy needed to break a bond between atoms.
Conservation of mass
Mass of reactants equals mass of products.
Chemical reaction
A process that changes substances into new ones.
Balanced symbol equation
An equation showing equal amounts of reactants and products.
Combustion
Burning a fuel with oxygen to produce heat, CO₂, and water.
Thermal decomposition
A reaction where heat breaks down a compound.
Reactants
Substances that start a chemical reaction.
Products
Substances that result from a chemical reaction.
