Metaphor

Meter

Mood

a device that evokes certain feelings for readers through a work's setting, tone, theme, and diction

Near Rhyme/ Slant Rhyme

a type of rhyme formed by words with similar but not identical sounds

Octet

any stanza in a poem that has 8 lines and follows a rhymed or unrhymed meter

Ode

a kind of poem usually praising something

Onomatopoeia

naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it

Open Form

do not used regular rhythmic pattern, are usually unrhymed, have varying line lengths, and have no set line groupings; free verse

Oxymoron

a self-contradicting word or group of words

Paradox

statement that contradicts itself

Petrarchan Sonnet

sonnet consisting of an octave with the rhyme scheme abbaabba and or a sestet with one of several rhyme schemes, as cdecde or cdcdcd

Quatrains

a rhymed grouping of four lines in a poem

Rhythm

the pattern of stresses within a line or verse

Sestet

the last six lines of a sonnet

Shakespearean Sonnet
