Lysosomes
An organelle containing digestive enzymes that are used to break down vesicles and protect from invaders.
Tissue
2 or more cells working together to perform the same function.
Organ system
2 or more organs working together to perform a specific job in the body.
Cell
Building blocks of life.
Organ
2 or more tissues to perform a specific job in the body.
Vesicle
A sac created by the Golgi apparatus containing materials, broken down by lysosomes.
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of ATP (energy) production, multiple in a cell.
Ribosomes
Makes proteins, found in the rough ER and in cytoplasm.
Prokaryotic cell/bacteria
A type of cell that has no nucleus and is simplified from a eukaryotic cell.
Eukaryotic cells
Cells with a nucleus that are more complex than prokaryotic cells.
Plant cells
Eukaryotic cells with chloroplasts, a cell wall and a large vacuole.
Animal cells
Eukaryotic cells with smaller but multiple vacuoles and with no chloroplast or cell wall.
DNA
A molecule that is stored in the nucleus in eukaryotic cells and in the cytoplasm in prokaryotic cells.
Multicellular
An organism made of more than one cell.
Unicellular
An organism made of one cell.
ATP
Main energy source that cells use for most of their work.
Cell membrane
A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell.
Cell wall
A strong, supporting layer around the cell membrane in plant cells.
Cytoplasm
A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended.
Cytoskeleton
A network of fibers that holds the cell together, helps the cell to keep its shape, and aids in movement.
Golgi apparatus
A system of membranes that modifies and packages materials into vesicles for export by the cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum/ER
A cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another.
Nucleus
Control center of the cell, holds DNA.
Nucleolus
Creates ribosomes, found in nucleus.
Nuclear membrane
Controls what goes in and out of the nucleus.
Cell theory
States that all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic units of life, and cells reproduce by dividing into 2 cells.
