Two Types of Permits

Special Learner's Permit Requirements
16 years old, written/vision test passed, 6 hours Behind The Wheel (BTW) at driving school
Special Learner's Permit Restrictions
6 months supervised driving, NJ driver over 21 with 3+ years experience, 2 red decals, restrictions on hours (11:01 pm - 5:00 am) and passengers (only 1 unless with guardian), seatbelts mandatory, no cellphones
Probationary License Requirements
17 years old, all regulations without suspensions, passed road test, 1 year unsupervised driving, decals required
Examination Permit (17 vs. 21)
17: written/vision test; 21: no hour/passenger/decal restrictions
Basic License Requirements
All probationary steps completed, 18+ years old
GDL Penalties
$100 fine and suspension; both you and the instructor are responsible
21+ Permit Holders Privileges
No passenger/hour limits, 3 months minimum supervised driving
GDL Exemptions
Work and Religion (with valid certification), Emergencies
Required Documents
At least 1 primary/secondary document, only 2 max 1 pt secondary docs, Address/Social Security #
License Renewal
Expiration: 4 years, Renewal cost: $24, Lost/stolen license: $11, Lost permits: $5
Altering a License Consequences
Loss of driving privilege, up to $1k fine, 6 months in jail
Illegal License Fines
$200-$500 fine and 30-90 days in jail
