Talk about the From, structural aspects, function/cultural context, physical context and historical context : roayal salt works
-Royal Salt Works
-Form: Decorative features that reference the way they make salt (the stone liquid showing that they boil the water to make salt). The whole compound is a semi circle. Neoclassical elements. Central axis entry way going right up the middle.
-Structural aspects: Greek doric columns. Made out of stone.
-Function/Cultural context: Old compound for everyone who worked at the salt compound to stay at. At the center of the buildings is the directors office (because salt is very expensive so he has a view over the whole property so he can watch the workers at all time) There is a small whole that represent a eye watching you. Hierarchy of directors building. On left and right of directors buildings are where they make the salt. Along the ring is where the workers live. Greek doric columns, everywhere but directors builing that has decorative columns, showing higharcy of that building. Grado references the manual labor with the rock pattern.
-Physical: France. In a rural area. Get water from local spring and wood from a nearby forest.
-Historical: At the time the new industry is being established, in France, there is architecture that has this hierarchy. So now that there is new higharcy architects are working with to create a place of work that still show hierarchy so that the workers don’t rise up. He is trying to keep people in power in power with architecture while meeting new industry. What supposed to be a bigger city but limited by money they only built the half-circle. Now a museaum.
Talk about the From, structural aspects, function/cultural context, physical context and historical context: rontunda
-Rotunda
-Form: Campus was layed out by the cruiculm that Jefferson choose. New curriculum where more towards the left while classic curriculum was to the right. All the pavilions have different orders - laid out with 2 doric order end pavilions. Facultiy lived in the upper floors for the higharcy. Looking west ward to the future. 9 “hotels” where students lived - Tucsin Collinade (column has a base). The lawns and gardens are separated by surprtein wall. Rotundra: inspired by pantheon (dome, pediment, corinthian order). Different from pantheon by less columns and simplified corinthian order.
-Structural aspects: Rotundra is made of stone. All living spaces had fireplaces. Sanke wall uses less bricks and is structurally sound. Rotundra has a dome, red bricks and white accents. Rotundra is neoclassical.
-Function/cultural: He left room for the campus to grow west, as it was a feeling thought the country that there was always an opportunity in the west. It is as the library and the dome is the planetarium. Shows separation of church and state as they didn’t have a major to study religion. Complex honor system that is self-governing. Jefferson desired to represent an appropriate American education environment through architecture - thought to be a good citizen you need to be educated and have room to grow like the campus can, teaching architecture by looking at the different orders that you can learn from, created the curriculum based on what the subjects that were considered more pure at the time.
-Phsysical: Large central lawn, urban setting
-Historical: Used to be a gym. Burned badly in a fire and rebuilt in the original design. Now serving as library and planitarum and still a university.

Talk about the From, structural aspects, function/cultural context, physical context and historical context: Unity temple
-Unity Temple
-Form: Form was driven from the want for not only unity in religous but in the forms. The style is prairie style and japense and their experincces of the spaces. Wanted both a religous space (larger) and social space (smaller). The religous space has high windoes to bring in light like alot of religous spaces. Path of discover: how you arrive- build up of inticipation around the building so the religous space feels more grand. Geometric forms come from blocks. Bynuclear desing- comes from the center. No steeple or corss. No religous symoliz. Broken box: starts as a box then breaks it apart, floors move up and down. The mezane is tilted making it apear larger then it is. Ceilings have skylight that brings in light with squaure patter for extra support.
-Structure: First poured public concrete building. Cortison oak for furnature. Steriotmic mass walls to block out views and light except for specfic windoes.
-Function/cultural: unitarian church to try and bring more people in. Path of discovery - pathway outside in - pressure and realease-could see something ahead pulling you forward. Thick walls with limited windows make them seem brighter and brings in the holy light. All about secession and how you move through the space.
-Physical context: suburb- very small site, why monlthic focus and drown out noise. Not a massive space but stands out due to its unque forms.
-Historical context: the site of an old church that burned down. Frank had just come back from japan and japan had just started to open up to so there was alot of interest in that style.
