Union of skilled and unskilled labor led by Terrance Powderly- fought for shorter work days, end child labor, abolish trusts and monopolies, and fought for “equal pay for equal work”
What was the American Federation of Labor?
Founded by Samuel Gompers, specifically for skilled workers, higher wages, used collective bargaining, fought for bread and butter issues that affected all workers
What was the Great Railway Strike?
1877- Railway companies cut wages by 10% causing strike at B&O RR which set off other strikes nation wide over 100K workers participated- Pres Hayes sent fed troops and over 100 people killed
What was the Pullman strike?
1894- George Pullman cut wages and increased rent for workers, fired anyone who tried to bargain causing Pullman strike- strike interrupted mail services so Pres Cleveland encouraged court to issue injunctions
What was the Homestead Strike?
1892- Henry Frick (manager of Carnegies Pittsburgh Steel Plant) cut wages of many workers- workers went on strike- Frick and Carnegie unable to make new contracts-Private Guards called Pinkertons and National Guardsmen

Intended to monitor and regulate practices of RR monopolies

Supreme court ruled sherman antitrust act was constitutional but didn’t apply to manufacturing- limited ability of the act to break up trust bc fed gov couldn’t regulate intrastate commerce or manufacturing

Push for political reform after assassination by Charles Gouteau (deranged office seeker who thought he deserved appointment for supporting Garfield) when Chester Arthur assumed presidency he signed Pendleton Civil Service Act (ending Spoils system)

Influenced upper/middle/lower classes all differently, upper class could afford electricity in home- lower classes had 24/7 factories meaning night hours and longer hours

Scientific innovation capitalized by Andrew Carnegie- allowed him to cheaply and quickly produce steel
What contributed to the growth of middle-class?
Growth of industry=higher paying white-collar jobs, new technologies requiring college educated and engineers and scientists, expanding college education helped growing professions as doctors, professors, and lawyers
What were some middle class advantages?
Access to college education, higher incomes, and shorter work weeks- higher standard of living and more leisure time
What were streetcar suburbs?
Middle and upper classes moving to suburbs to avoid crime, poverty, and pollution. Higher income allowed larger homes and yards

Between 1890 to 1910, typically from Southern and Eastern Europe and sometimes China, more religiously divers- incl Catholic and Jewish, ofter settled in ethnic neighborhoods in cities
What was the American Protective Assosiation?
Nativist group,mostly targeted Catholic immigrants, feared increased immigration threatened US identity

Farmers and laborers, supported reforms (ex. graduated income tax, bank regulation, and unlimited coinage of silver, party catered to finding solutions to problems farmers faced

They ran with James Weaver- one of only 3rd party candidates to receive electoral votes

Why did Americans settle the West?
Cheap and abundant land, many RR and mining job opportunities, increase in commercialized ranching and agriculture
What were two causes of Boomtowns?
Increase in mining and lumber mills
What happened once Boomtown materials ran out?
Many would abandon the town to search for new opportunities- turning into bus or ghost towns
How were time zones developed?
Expansion of railroads and development of telegraph and telephone created need for universal time to arrange shipping and travel

Wanted to take advantage of Homestead act and get own their own land
