Fossil Fuels
Formed millions of years ago.
Fossil Fuels
Made from dead, compressed plant and animal remains. Heat and pressure combines the remains with mud, sand and clay.
Fossil Fuels
Provide 90% of light and heat used to run homes and cars
3 Types of Fossil Fuels
Oil, Coal, Natural Gas
Coal
Solid Form, Found Buried in the Earth.
Coal
formed over millions of years by decay of land vegetation. When layers are compacted and heated over time, deposits turned into coal.
Peat
a fibrous, soft, spongy substance in which plant remains are easily recognizable. It contains a large amount of water and must be dry before use ; soft, smokes, doesn’t burn well
Lignite
formed when peat is subjected to increased vertical pressure from accumulating sediments. It crumbles with no trouble and should not be shipped or handled before use ; brown, woody, not much energy
Bituminous
greatly used in industry as a source of heat energy ; dark brown, common, found deep in Earth
Anthracite
also known as "hard coal" because it is hard and has a high lustre ; black, hard, brittle, uncommon
Oil
AKA Petroleum ; Liquid Form ; Found in areas once covered with oceans
Oil
Found where animal and plant remains layered, and were changed into oil by heat and pressure
Oil
Found by drilling wells into rock deposits
Natural Gas
Liquid Form ; Found near oil- rises to top of oil because its less dense
87.1%
of Consumption of Fossil Fuels during 2011
Coal
Generates Electricity
Oil
Heat, Road asphalt, Plastics, Fabrics, Medicines, Building materials, Transportation
Natural Gas
Heating homes, Least expensive, cleanest, Transportation
30%
US consumes % of Fossil Fuels
2080
By ____ we will have used up almost all fossil fuels
1000
In one day we use ____ years worth of fossil fuels
Fossil Fuels
Made of Hydrocarbons that burn well.
Fossil Fuels
Easy to store, transport, and use.
Fossil Fuels
Available in abundance.
Fossil Fuels
Produce large amounts of energy.
Fossil Fuels
Non-Renewable
