action

Serious stories that depict realistic characters. These show us humans at their best, worst and everything in between.
thriller
Also referred to as suspense, these are known to promote anticipation, uncertainty and anxiety. They are intended to keep the audience at the egde of their seats.
family
These are appropriate for younger viewers. They aim to appeal to a wide range of ages, not only to children. These may fall into other genres as well, including fantasy, comedy and adventure.
fantasy
Usually involves an element of magic, myth, wonder, make-believe creatures or the supernatural. The events are unlikely to occur in real life and instead take place in the imagination or dreams of storyteller.
documentary
These are non-fiction, primarily for the purpose of educating or revealing historical facts.
cartoon/ animation
These are made using illustrations or CGI (computer-generated imagery), rather than filming actors.
sport
These can be based on a sport setting, event or an athlete.
sci-fi
Heroes, distant planets, futuristic technology and scientific developments (robots, spaceships) can all play a role in these. They are very imaginative and require expert film production.
