5-Alpha reductase deficiency

A condition in which individuals have XY chromosomes but lack sufficient quantities of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, so they’re unable to convert testosterone into dihydrotesterone and therefore cannot masculinize their externa genitalia in utero

Abstinence-only sex education

Programs teaching that abstaining until marriage is the only way to avoid pregnancy, STIs, and negative psychological consequences

Acculturation

The process by which immigrants adopt the cultural norms and beliefs of their new society

Active Constructive Responding

A positive pattern of interacting that involves responding enthusiastically to a conversational partner and asking follow-up questions to prolong the conversation and sense of excitement.

Affirmative Consent

Mutual, explicit, voluntary, active consent that is given before a sexual act; such consent cannot occur through coercion and can be withdrawn at any time.

Age Concealment

Beauty work undertaken to hid the signs of aging at to be able to “pass” as younger than one’s chronological age.

Ageism

Prejudice related to a person’s actual or perceived age.

Agoraphobia

A type of anxiety related to being outside of the home or being in a public place.

Allyship

An ongoing process in which individuals who have privilege develop relationships with individuals who have socially marginalized identities as a ways to address social injustice.

Ambivalent Sexism

A form of sexism that includes the two related, but complementary, components of hostility and benevolence.

Amplification

A technique that people with marginalized social identities can use in meetings to support each other: one person repeats what another member of their social group has said to draw attention to the contribution.

Androgen-Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS)

A condition in which testosterone is present but cannot connect with cell receptors. Individuals with AIS have XY chromosomes, no female-typical internal organs, and active testes.

Anorexia Nervosa

A disorder that involves self-imposed food restriction resulting in significantly reduced body weight, fear of gaining weight, and disturbance in how one’s weight is perceived.

Aromantic

A term used to describe a person who experiences little to no romantic attraction. This term is sometimes shortened to aro.

Asexual

A term used to describe a sexual orientation for people who experience little to no sexual sexual attraction. This term is sometimes shortened to ace.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs)

Techniques for treating infertility, including intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy.

Attachment Parenting

A style of parenting in which parents focus on meeting the child’s needs on the child’s schedule.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

A disorder characterized by problems with focusing as well as inattention, hyperactivity, excess movement, and impulsivity.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

A disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, impaired communication, and restrictive/repetitive behaviors.
