Composition and arrangement
The focal point is the ketchup bottle because it is the tallest object and the only one with a label. Your eyes are led to it by the lines along the window ledge and the pale shadow on the left
Arrangement and Composition
The lead in is the fork on the plate leading your eye from the right side like an arrow. this leads your eye on a journey around the painting to find the focal point.
Subject Matter and Imagery
Goings has used everyday dinner objects like the Heinz ketchup bottle to dignify the ordinary routine. Appealing to ordinary working people
Imagery and Subject Matter
Goings is telling a story capturing a moment in time. there is a sense of a person who has just left the table and will return any minute to finish the iced tea and apple pie before they continue with their day.
Colour 1
Goings has use orange and blue which are complimentary colours. These colours are opposite in the colour wheel which stimulate the photoreceptor cells in the eye creating an intense contrast.
Colour 2
Goings has used white to paint the shiny and reflective surfaces of the objects creating a Photorealistic painting. This is particularly obvious in the metal napkin holder.
Line 1
Going has used contrasting vertical and horizontal lines as seen in the glass and the shadows which create vibrant visual impact.
Line 2
Goings has used the diagonal lines of the grey shadows on the table to emphasize space in the painting.
Pattern 1
The sun light coming in through the blinds and the curtains that are cast on to the table create intricate repeat patterns. These patterns break up the smooth surface of the table creating visual impact in this area.
Pattern 2
The ellipses on the objects create a circular repeat pattern that lead your eye anti-clockwise round the painting starting at the plate finishing with the glass.
Shape 1
The sharp geometric shapes of the sunlit rectangles and the soft lacy dappled shapes from the curtains creates a sharp contrast which adds visual impact.

The cylindrical shapes of the glass and the sugar pourer are very similar and mirror one another across the table balancing the painting.

The realistic textures of the smooth hard tiles contrast with the soft lacy curtains this draws your eye to the background of the painting creating depth.

Goings takes lots of photos for his still life’s and chooses combinations of objects, he then projects the photos on to the canvas and paints using the photo as reference to create an exact copy.

Goings uses small paint brushes to create the smooth realistic texture. He builds up the layers of oil paint over a period of weeks to create the rich colours and finally finishes it with a hard varnish which gives it depth and sheen like the Old Masters such as Vermeer.

38x53 cm- a small painting which invites you to look more closely, it creates an intimate feel immersing you in the scene.

the scale of the objects are all in correct proportion to one another creating a hyper-realistic effect.
