Evaluate the extent to which conditions in the Interwar years (1919-1939) contributed to the start of World War II.
After the destruction of World War I, European nations faced widespread hardship and political instability. The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 placed full war blame on Germany, forcing it to pay massive reparations, limit its military power, and surrender territory, fueling German resentment toward the Allied Powers. The Great Depression of 1929 devastated economies around the world, increasing political instability and weakening support for democratic governments. The economic despair and social unrest led many people to turn toward totalitarian ideas such as fascism and militarism, which promised order, stability, and national strength. To a major extent, the conditions of unresolved grievances following World War I, rise of extremist ideas, and political tension in the Interwar years contributed to the start of World War II.
