Alliteration

Repetition of initial consonant sounds

Allusion

A brief, undeveloped reference to a familiar or famous place, event, or figure from litature; as it is one device used for acheiving compression in writing, it differs ffrom a direct reference by virtue of its brevity(an overt allusion)

Connotation

The emotional implications and associations that a word may carry, which provides the context beyond the literal interpretation, the coloration provided is also useful in providing the tone

Couplet

two successive lines, usually in the same meter, linked by rhyme

Denotation

Literal precise meaning or limited dictionary meaning of a word

Diction

The choice of words, phraseology, or vocabulary used purposefully by the writer depending on the subject, the type of poem, purpose and style

Enjambment

A line of poetry that ends without punctuation, causing the reader to continue into the following line without a pause

Figures of speech

An extended rhetoric of connotation, a compressed language used to add meaning beyond the literal interpretation. E.g(metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole, metonymy and synecdoche)

Metonymy

A figure of speech in which something is referred to by using the name of something that is associated with it. (E.g Referring to the President of the United States or their administration as "the White House" or "the Oval Office" Referring to the American technology industry as "Silicon Valley" Referring to the American advertising industry as "Madison Avenue")

Hyperbole

A figure of speech that uses exaggeration to express strong emotion, make a point, or evoke humor

Image

Words and word groups that help the reader sense or picture what is being described; can be literal or figurative. Imagery is simply a [patten of images that emerges through a poem.

Imagery

Description that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) (see imagery)

Metaphor

A common figure of speech in which a direct comparison or identification is made between two unlike objects

Mood

The predominant atmosphere of a work. In poetry, mood is conveyed forcefully through imagery and rhythm

Moral

a lesson taught by a literary work

Onomatopoeia

The use of a word that imitates a sound, suggests or reinforces its meaning

Synecdoche

a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa

Caesura

A natural pause or break in a line of poetry, usually near the middle of the line. It is often used by a omniscient narrator in stories.

Motif

In narrative, a motif is a distinctive repeating feature or idea; often, it helps develop other narrative aspects such as theme or mood. A narrative motif can be created through the use of imagery, structural components, language, and other elements throughout literature.

Assonance

resemblance of sound between syllables of nearby words, arising particularly from the rhyming of two or more stressed vowels, but not consonants (e.g. sonnet, porridge ), but also from the use of identical consonants with different vowels (e.g. killed, cold, culled ).
