What is thermodynamics
The study of energy and energy transfer
What is energy
The ability to do work
what is kinetic energy?
energy of motion
what is potential energy?
energy that is stored by and object as a result of its composition or position
what is heat
the energy transferred between two objects as a result of a difference in temperature between them
what is thermal energy
sum of the potential energy of all the particles of an object or substance
what temperature
the measure of the average kinetic energies of all the particles of an object or substance
what is the law of conservation of energy
energy cannot be created or destroyed (it’s only converted into another form)
what is a system
any sample that is under observation
what is a surrounding
everything else other than the system
what is an open system
a system that can exchange both energy and matter with its surroundings
what is a closed system
a system that can exchange energy but not matter with its surroundings
what is an isolated system
a system that cannot exchange energy or matter with its surroundings

what do the terms stand for?
q = heat (J)
m = mass (g)
c = specific heat capacity (J\g*c)
t = change in temperature
= final temp - initial temp
