Work Simplification Principles
-Eliminate: remove unnecessary equipment, movements, or steps to procedures. Pre set trays
-Combine: use double ended instruments
-Rearrange: place equipment into position that will eliminate unnecessary movement
-Simplify: eliminate as many variables as possible
Work Simplification Benefits
Reduces expenses, stimulates team work concept, provide better patient care, efficient time utilization, better planning and trouble shooting
Motion Economy Principles
-reduce the length and number of motions
-use body motions that use the least amount of time
-use smooth continuous motions (avoid zig-zag motions)
-use of preset trays organizing instruments in the order they will be used
-minimize the number of instruments
-set up instruments, equipment and materials ahead of time
-place patient in a supine position
-work area are 1" to 2" lower than the elbow
-operating stool for proper posture and body support
Classification of Motion: Class 1
Movement of fingers only, picking up an instrument from the patient tray
Classification of Motion: Class 2
Movement of fingers and wrist, mixing materials on the tray
Classification of Motion: Class 3
Movement of fingers, wrist, and elbow, transferring instruments to the operator
Classification of Motion: Class 4
Use of entire arm and shoulder, repositioning the dental/operating light
Classification of Motion: Class 5
Use of entire arm and upper torso, rotating and reaching for items on the counter
