Compound
A substance containing at least two different elements that are chemically bonded together.
Mixture
Contains at least two different substances (elements and/or compounds) that are not chemically bonded together.
Element
Only contains one type of atom.
Physical Change
Involves rearranging particles, but the individual particles are not changed in any way, and is reversible.
Chemical Change
Involves the creation of at least one new chemical substance and is irreversible.
Solute
The substance that is being dissolved.
Solvent
The substance that the solute is being dissolved in.
Solution
The mixture of the solute and the solvent.
Soluble
Substances that dissolve easily.
Insoluble
Substances that will not dissolve.
Saturated Solution
A solution where no more solute will dissolve.
Miscible
When two liquids are able to mix together
Immiscible
Liquids that do not mix together
Distillation
A process used for separating two or more miscible liquids, making use of their different boiling points.
Chromatography
A method of separating a number of soluble substances from the same mixture.
Filtration
A method used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.
Decanting
Carefully pouring away a liquid, leaving the solid behind.
Evaporation
A method to separate a soluble solid from a liquid by vaporizing the liquid.
Crystallisation
The process where crystals of the solute form.
