New cards

what is the neoliberal response

  • they believe globalised education is a great step forward for society

  • the governments role in providing education should be reduced- this would also reduce their spending on education and the budget can be spent elsewhere → the government should allow global corporations to provide more education (privatisation)

  • globalisation is positive for education as it provides UK unis with opportunities (partnerships with unis abroad)

2
New cards

what are the marxist criticisms of the neoliberalist view

  • globalised education only gives opportunity to the wealthy- better quality, expensive international schools compared to lower quality state schools

  • if the government reduces their spending on education, class inequalities will increase e.g. private education will maintain high standards while state schools aren’t recovering funding to give pupils what they need

  • Spring- discusses educational corporatism → global corporations will set educational agendas in their interests (the priority will be making profit, not helping students/parents/teachers)

  • there will also be a digital divide in educational as access to information and communication technology will be unequal

3
New cards

what is the new labour (post-fordist) response

  • government spending on education should be increased as it raises educational quality and standards

  • they raised school leaving age to 18

  • they believe it is important for schools to set students up to be able to provide high skilled work → competent workforce for the global labour market

  • they encouraged more people to go to university so there would be better job prospects and providing many scholarships and bursaries to poorer students
