Screw Press or Expeller Method
Mechanical extraction method where seeds are cracked, dried, cooked, and extruded through a die to remove oil.
Direct Solvent Method
Processing method where oilseeds are cracked, cooked, ground, and then extracted with a solvent like hexane to remove the lipid.
Pre-Press Solvent Method
A combination of the expeller process and solvent extraction, resulting in oilseed meals with the lowest lipid content.
Maillard Reaction
A reaction between carbohydrates and amino acids caused by excessive heat, reducing the availability of nutrients.
Screw Pressed or Expelled Oilseed Meals
Have the greatest lipid content (4-5%) among the three processing methods.
Protein content of oilseed meals
Standardized prior to marketing.
Biological value of oilseed meals
Generally lower than animal protein feeds.
Lysine content
Variable and low in all oilseed meals except soybean meal.
Mineral content of oilseed meals
Low in calcium and high in phosphorus, with at least 50% of the phosphorus being relatively unavailable to monogastrics.
