Anatomy
The study of the structure of body parts and their relationships to one another.
Physiology
The study of how body parts function and work together to maintain life.
Anatomical Position
The standard body position: standing upright, facing forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward.
Superior (Cranial)
Toward the head or upper part of the body; above.
Inferior (Caudal)
Away from the head; toward the lower part of the body; below.
Anterior (Ventral)
Toward the front of the body.
Posterior (Dorsal)
Toward the back of the body.
Medial
Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body.
Intermediate
Between a more medial and a more lateral structure.
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment or origin.
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment or origin.
Superficial
Toward or at the body surface.
Deep
Away from the body surface; more internal.
Sagittal Plane
Divides the body into right and left parts.
Midsagittal (Median) Plane
Divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Frontal (Coronal) Plane
Divides the body into anterior and posterior (front and back) parts.
Transverse (Horizontal) Plane
Divides the body into superior and inferior (top and bottom) parts.
Dorsal Body Cavity
Contains the brain and spinal cord.
Ventral Body Cavity
Contains the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
Thoracic Cavity
Contains the heart and lungs.
Abdominopelvic Cavity
Contains digestive organs, urinary bladder, and reproductive organs.
Abdominal Cavity
Contains stomach, liver, intestines, and other digestive organs.
Pelvic Cavity
Contains bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum.
