Refrain

A line or set of lines repeated several times over the course of a poem

Ode

a poem praising a particular person or thing

Rhyme

Repetition of sounds at the end of words

Haiku

A japanese form of poetry, consisting of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables

Free verse

Poetry that does not have a regular meter or rhyme scheme

Narrative poem

a poem that tells a story and has a plot

Acrostic

a poem in which the first letters of each line form a word or words

Ballad

A poem set to music that narrates a story

Sonnet

a poem of fourteen lines with ten syllables per line, popularized by Shakespeare

Elegy

a sorrowful poem or speech, often times read at a funeral

Cinquain

5 line poem that forms a diamond or tree shape

Verse

A single line of poetry

Stanza

A group of lines in a poem similar to a paragraph

Rhyme scheme

A regular pattern of rhyming words at the end of the lines in a poem

Meter

A regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry

Internal rhyme

two words within the same line that rhyme with each other

Partial rhyme

words whose final consonant sounds almost rhyme, "close enough"
