Memory Retrieval
Process of accessing/retrieving information stored in memory
Two Primary Types of Memory Retrieval
Recall & Recognition
Recall
Remembering information without external cues from past experiences or previously learned information
Recognition
Remembering information using retrieval/external clues from past experiences or previously learned information
Context-Dependent Memory
Retrieval (being able to recall information) is more effective when in the same environment as when the information was encoded
Mood-Congruent Memory
Retrieval (being able to recall information) is enhanced when in the same mood as when the information was encoded
State-Dependent Memory
Retrieval(recalling information) is more effective when an individual is in the same internal physical/emotional state during both encoding and recall
2 ways to improve Retrieval and Retention
Testing Effect and Metacognition
Testing Effect
Frequent/Consistent testing of newly learned material improves long-term retention
Metacognition
Awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes can improve memory
