What is a word equation?
Reactants are written out in full on the left and products are written out in full on the left, e.g. methane + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water.
What is a symbol equation?
Reactants and products are written out as symbols and formulae, e.g. CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O
Do symbol, word or both types of equations need to be balanced?
Only symbol equations need balancing.
What is a balanced equation?
An equation where there is the same number of atoms on each side, e.g. CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O becomes CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O
How do you balance an equation?
Add numbers in front of each molecule so that there is the same number of each type of atom on both sides.
