Describe the process of controlled fission of U-235 in the nuclear reactor
U-235 is an unstable nucleus that absorbs a neutron
U-235 splits into two smaller nuclei and 2/3 neutrons are also released
This releases lots of gamma radiation and heat energy
This heat energy is used to heat water in a nuclear reactor which turns into steam
The steam turns a turbine which is connected to a generator that turns to produce electricity
How does a chain reaction work of U-235?
The neutrons produced in a fission reaction can be absorbed by other U-235 nuclei that further split into two smaller nuclei
What do control rods do in a nuclear reactor?
Control Rods are made from Boron and absorbs unwanted neutrons to slow down the nuclear reaction
They control how much energy you produce
What do moderators do?
Moderators slows down neutrons so they can be properly absorbed by unstable nuclei
What does shielding do in a reactor?
Shielding absorbs ionising radiation and is made of thick concrete
Because the neutrons and gamma rays released are highly penetrating ionising radiation
