Laptop Motherboard vs. Desktop Motherboard
Laptop motherboards vary by manufacturer and are proprietary, while desktop motherboards have standard form factors.
CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit)
Customer Replaceable Unit; examples include the battery, RAM, and sometimes the keyboard.
Laptop
Can run on battery or plugged in; usually runs a full OS and can run desktop software; RAM and storage are upgradeable.
Tablet
Runs a Mobile OS; larger touch screens; runs apps downloadable from app store; has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity; some have cellular capability.
E-Reader
Special Purpose device with display optimized for reading text; may have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity; limited cellular data.
Smartwatch
A wearable device with a small touchscreen display; Runs a special OS and apps; Offers sensors that exchange data with a smartphone over Bluetooth; Often includes body monitoring and fitness tracking.
Fitness Tracker
Special Purpose wearable device that monitors heart function and physical activity; USB Connectivity and may include Bluetooth.
Smartphone
Uses a special mobile OS; Small screen sizes averaging 5"; Touch screens with no physical keyboard; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cellular data capability; Software apps are downloadable from app stores.
Liquid-crystal display (LCD)
Commonly uses Twisted Nematic (TN) or In-Plane switching (IPS).
Light-emitting diode (LED)
Uses less power and has a longer lifespan than LCD.
Organic light-emitting diode (OLED)
Used commonly for mobile devices and digital cameras.
Docking Station
Allows a laptop to function similarly to a desktop by utilizing extra ports and connectors.
Port Replicator
Connects via USB and commonly has fewer features and connectors than docking stations, designed for multi-vendor devices in the workplace.
Detachable screens
Some laptops permit the touchscreen to be used like a tablet when the display is detached.
Touch screens
Laptops with touchscreens have a special glass attached to the front of the screen known as a digitizer.
Cutoff switches
Helps conserve power by turning off the display.
Backlight
Shines through the screen and illuminates the display.
Inverter
Used to convert direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).
Tethering
Connecting other devices to a cell phone via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB to use the phone’s cellular connection to access the internet.
Hotspot
When a cellular phone allows Wi-Fi devices to connect and use the mobile data network.
Data synchronized
Contacts, Applications, Email, Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, Calendar, Bookmarks, Location data, Social media data, E-books, Passwords
Bluetooth pairing
Two Bluetooth devices establish a connection to share resources.
Bluetooth discoverable mode
Occurs when a Bluetooth device transmits device information which include device name, services that the device can use, Bluetooth class and device name.
Mobile device is unresponsive
RAM needs to be cleared of data. Solution is to soft reset the device.
Mobile device is unresponsive
Apps are consuming too many system resources. Solution is to close apps using force stop option on Android or double-tap home and swipe the app off the screen in iOS.
