Oxidation
Loss of electrons.
Reduction
Gain of electrons.
Reducing agent
Substance that donates electrons and is itself oxidized.
Oxidizing agent
Substance that accepts electrons and is itself reduced.
Redox Reaction
A chemical reaction that involves the transfer of electrons between two species.
OIL RIG
A mnemonic to remember that Oxidation Is Loss and Reduction Is Gain.
Balancing Redox Equations
The process of ensuring the same number of atoms and the same charge on both sides of the equation.
Half Reaction Method
A technique used to balance redox equations by separating oxidation and reduction processes.
Net Ionic Equation
An equation showing only the species that undergo a change in a reaction.
Oxidation States
The charge of an atom in a compound, which can help determine oxidation and reduction.
Principal Atom
The atom that is primarily involved in a redox reaction.
Spectator Ion
An ion that does not participate in the actual redox reaction and can be canceled out.
Potassium Dichromate
A chemical compound, K2Cr2O7, used in redox reactions.
Sulfur Dioxide
A chemical compound, SO2, that can act as a reducing agent in redox reactions.
Charge Balance
The process of ensuring that the total charge is the same on both sides of a chemical equation.
