Conflict
A collision of values, interests or intentions among individuals, groups, or communities.
Dispute Resolution (DR)
Processes through which a dispute is settled, commonly involving negotiation, mediation, or arbitration.
Mediation
A form of dispute resolution where a neutral third party assists disputants in reaching an agreement.
Cultural norms
Shared expectations and rules that guide behavior within a group or society, which can act as barriers to articulating grievances.
Transformative conflict
The process of naming, blaming, and claiming in order to address perceived injuries in a conflict.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
Processes, other than judicial determination, in which an impartial person assists disputants in resolving their issues.
Facilitative ADR
A dispute resolution approach where a practitioner helps parties identify issues and develop options for mutual agreement.
Advisory ADR
A dispute resolution approach where a practitioner assesses the dispute and provides advice on possible outcomes.
Determinative ADR
A dispute resolution approach where a practitioner evaluates the dispute and makes a binding determination.
Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument
A tool used to assess individual responses to conflict through five styles: avoiding, accommodating, competing, compromising, and collaborating.
