How does a PET scan work?
Radioactive isotopes are injected into the body
The isotopes settle on areas of high cellular activity
The radioactive material decays and gives off gamma rays that can be detected by a scanner
The location of the isotope can then be imaged
This helps to identify the most active cells/greatest blood supply
What are the uses of a PET scan?
Used in brain imaging studies
Used to follow up patients undergoing cancer treatment
