How does a PET scan work?

  • Radioactive isotopes are injected into the body

  • The isotopes settle on areas of high cellular activity

  • The radioactive material decays and gives off gamma rays that can be detected by a scanner

  • The location of the isotope can then be imaged

  • This helps to identify the most active cells/greatest blood supply
