In a power, the number used as a factor.

decimal notation

A number containing a decimal point. A number that has digits in the tenths, hundredths and/or thousandths place

difference

the answer to a subtraction problem

the number that is being divided (goes on the inside)

divisor

the number that divides the dividend (on the outside)

division

An operation in which we make parts out of a number, which are equal

A way to write numbers that shows the place value of each digit.

In a power, the number of times the base is used as a factor.

factor

a number that is multiplied by another number to find a product

multiplication

a total amount from a set of equal sized groups, repeated addition

the value given to a digit by its place in a number

place value chart

A chart that shows the value of the digits in a number

powers of 10

A number like 10, 100, 1,000 and so on. It is the result of using only 10 as a factor.

A way to write numbers by using words.

standard form

The usual way of writing a number that shows only its digits, no words.

A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables.

Brackets

[ ], grouping symbols, A pair of symbols used to enclose sections of an expression.

Braces { }

{ } grouping symbols; mainly used when parentheses and brackets have already been used

parentheses ( )

Used in mathematics as grouping symbols for operations. When simplifying an expression, the operations within the these are performed first.

greater than

used to compare two numbers when the first number is larger than the second number.

less than

used to compare two numbers when the first number is smaller than the second number.
